Our client, a leading principal contractor in the construction industry, is seeking an experienced Mechanical Site Manager to oversee a high-value project located in St John’s Wood, London. This 18-month project focuses on comprehensive building upgrades, including a complete strip-out, installation of a new clad roof, and sophisticated plant replacements with new air handling units, ductwork, chillers, pipework, and a full MEP package. Position Summary:
The Mechanical Site Manager will play a crucial role in managing the mechanical aspects of the project, ensuring that work is carried out on schedule, within budget, and to the client’s specifications. The successful candidate will be expected to leverage their mechanical engineering background, prior experience with principal contractors, and extensive site management expertise to drive the project’s success. They will collaborate closely with a multidisciplinary team, including MEP engineers, subcontractors, and quality and safety inspectors, and will report to the Project Manager.
Key Responsibilities:1. Project Leadership & Management
- Oversee all mechanical aspects of the project from start to finish, ensuring adherence to project timelines, budget constraints, and safety protocols.
- Coordinate and manage the installation of air handling systems, ductwork, chillers, pipework, and other mechanical components in accordance with the design specifications and client requirements.
- Organize and lead site meetings, providing updates on project progress, issues, and next steps.
- Liaise with the Project Manager and MEP teams to streamline workflow and resolve on-site issues promptly.
- Supervise and provide guidance to subcontractors, ensuring their work aligns with project standards and timelines.
- Maintain strong communication channels with all stakeholders, including clients, engineers, and suppliers, to guarantee consistent progress and quality control.
- Conduct regular quality checks to verify that work meets the required technical specifications and industry standards.
- Ensure compliance with building codes, regulations, and health & safety protocols on-site, maintaining a safe and efficient work environment.
- Manage documentation for all mechanical installations, inspections, and compliance records, reporting any discrepancies to the Project Manager.
- Monitor project expenditures, controlling costs and managing resources efficiently to stay within the project’s budget.
- Coordinate material procurement and equipment logistics, ensuring timely delivery to keep the project on track.
- Identify opportunities for cost savings while maintaining the integrity and quality of the project.
- Provide technical support and troubleshooting expertise for mechanical installations and ensure timely resolution of any mechanical issues.
- Interpret and analyze mechanical engineering designs, blueprints, and technical specifications to ensure accurate execution on-site.
- Drive problem-solving initiatives to overcome project challenges, maintaining momentum and minimizing delays.
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
- Experience: Minimum of 7-10 years of site management experience, with a solid track record in mechanical engineering and MEP projects.
- Previous Experience: Must have experience working with a principal contractor, ideally on high-value construction or MEP projects.
- Project Management Skills: Proven experience in managing projects valued at £5 million+ and ability to effectively coordinate large teams.
- Technical Proficiency: Extensive knowledge of mechanical systems including air handling, ductwork, chillers, pipework, and full MEP package integration.
- Leadership & Team Management: Strong leadership abilities with proven success in guiding teams on complex projects.
- Attention to Detail: High standard for quality and precision, with the ability to uphold exacting standards in execution.
- Problem Solving: Advanced troubleshooting skills and the ability to think critically and make sound decisions under pressure.
- Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, adept at liaising with clients, contractors, and engineering teams.
